Types of modelling

 


Fashion editorial
Fashion editorial is a big sector of the modelling industry. Fashion editorial models are photographed mainly for magazines and newspapers promoting designers and high street fashion items. Features on shoes, jewellery, bags, hair accessories, jackets, belts and a myriad of other fashion items all call for models to illustrate the trends and selected products.
Fashion editorial models, are called to a photo shoot specifically for a magazine feature, or to promote the work of a particular designer. These shoots are professional and will usually include a hair stylist, make-up artist and dresser as well as the photographer and his or her crew, and the art director for the feature, or sometimes the designers themselves. As they are promoting pre-selected outfits or accessories, models are unlikely to need to bring any of their own clothes, although sometimes they are asked to, particularly if the focus of the feature is shoes or jewellery.
Unlike runway modelling, fashion editorial models don't need to meet strict height requirements, although they will still need to be the required dress size and have good skin, teeth and hair.

Requirements

For fashion catwalk and editorial:

Girls should be between 13 and 21 and at least 5'9" height, size 6 or 8 and with maximum 34-24-34 inches (86-60-86 cm) with some variations depending on height (the numbers are for chest, waist and hips)

Boys should be at least 6’00 height and Suite size: 40 to 42 Regular or long (US) / 48 to 50 (European) and fit.

Fashion catwalk
Catwalk means modelling clothes in fashion shows. Perceived to be glamorous, it is very hard work, very difficult to get into and only a few models make it to the top. Distinctive facial features are on and off in demand, but the requirements and expectations change constantly. Unless you are famous supermodel to make it as a catwalk models you need to be tall, thin and young.

Requirements

For fashion catwalk and editorial:

Girls should be between 13 and 21 and at least 5'9" height, size 6 or 8 and with maximum 34-24-34 inches (86-60-86 cm) with some variations depending on height (the numbers are for chest, waist and hips)

Boys should be at least 6’00 height and Suite size: 40 to 42 Regular or long (US) / 48 to 50 (European) and fit.

Commercial
The commercial market includes almost everything that involves selling products apart from fashion editorial, of course.

In commercial modelling, people of all shapes and sizes are hired to model for the client. The models are mainly used in ads for magazines, TV, newspapers, billboards, catalogues, household products, and other forms of advertising.

Commercial modelling is a growing market. Everyone from banks to shopping centres wants to be associated with often smiley and happy people. As the companies want to advertise in a non threatening manner to their potential clients rather than amazing them with their models beauty, everyday looking types are the most used in commercial modelling. Great skin, teeth, healthy bodies and a positive attitude are a must.

Requirements

There are no specific measurements for commercial models, it depends on what the advertiser is looking for. However, for models less than 5'5" for female and 5'10" for male models the chances of getting work as a commercial model will be slim, except maybe for specialty markets.

Glamour
Glamour modelling is about putting the emphasis on the model rather than a product being advertised or endorsed. It is about creating sexually provocative images, it is about the attitude, the eroticism, the mood, and sometimes nothing more than a particular look in a models eye.
It is also the most popular market where the majority of models can earn a relatively profitable living. There are no height or age restrictions (though you have to be at least 18-years-old before a photographer will even consider working with you on a glamour shoot), nor are there any size issues.
Glamour modelling can range from lingerie to nude work, but it does NOT insist on nudity of any kind implied or otherwise. What a model is prepared to reveal is based sole on the requirements of a photographer offering work, but more importantly, it is dictated exclusively by what is agreed between both parties beforehand.

Requirements

There are no height or age restrictions (though you have to be at least 18-years-old before a photographer will even consider working with you on a glamour shoot), nor are there any size issues.


Body parts:
Body parts modeling focus on a specific part of the model. I t can be hands, feet, ears, hair, teeth and other parts of the body.
Parts models are on the books of all agencies, as designers and advertisers are always on the lookout for people who have the attributes to promote certain products. As always, there are some rules about how you approach part modelling, and the model has to be prepared to put a considerable amount of effort into keeping it beautiful.

Fitness:
Protein bar ads, health shakes ads, sports clothes ads, fitness magazines – they all use fitness models. Fitness models should have great muscle definition and work out regularly. The best place for a fitness model to start her career is to get involved with contests and fitness conventions, info on which could be found on the Internet.

Plus models:
Plus models are bigger sizes models between 12 an 18. Because the fashion industry has seen a lucrative field in producing clothes for bigger women this is a modelling field that is increasing over the years.

Catalogue
Catalogue models appear in catalogues of major chains and mail order shops, and on their online shops on the Internet. These models are picked for a project because they represent the ideal of the market segment for which that catalogue is targeted. Often this is the classic beauty - tall, slender, healthy, and beautiful - but requirements can be fairly flexible.
As a catalogue model, fashion is also an option. A fashion catalogue shoot can take several days or even weeks, depending on the size of the catalogue and the order in which the director and photographer choose to shoot.
The advantage of catalogue modelling over runway or editorial jobs is that you can usually last longer as a model. There are always catalogues that are specifically marketed towards the middle-aged or older generation, and they need models of the right age to promote the clothing. Catalogue modeling is also one of best payed in the business.
Most young models see catalogue modelling as a good way to move into fashion editorial and runway, but for those who aren't looking for an international profile it can be a good way to earn a living.

Requirements

Average looks are sought, requirements are somewhat more relaxed and a little closer to the real world - but this still means having a dream body.

Character
Some jobs require models with an everyday look, such as a mechanic, grocery clerk, schoolteacher, librarian, little old lady, and so on. Character models rarely become household names, but this is an extremely lucrative field if you've got the right look.

Fit and Showroom models
Fit and showroom modelling could be somewhat boring work, but it pays well. Showroom models show the clothing samples to clients. Generally, showroom work is booked through agencies and it is very seasonal – it’s busy after the fashion show season.
Fittings involve trying on samples of designer clothing, having your measurements taken and telling the designer how does the garment feel. Fit models have to be a specific size.
Fit models can keep working for a very long time as long as they keep their measurements. The best way to become a fit model would be to visit your local fashion design school. Calling modeling agencies and asking if they have a fit division helps, too. More independent-minded fit models can try calling clothing companies directly.

Requirements

Female fit models range from size four to size 14, but size eight gets the most work For males it’s the medium size that fits the most.
